Science enthusiasts of all ages made their way to Medicine Hat College on Saturday to take part in the Science Olympics, putting prospective new teachers to the test.

The event, a partnership between the Mount Royal-Medicine Hat College Elementary Education program and Praxis Science Outreach, is an incredible opportunity for the students to acquire some hands-on experience prior to their practicums, said education instructor Jason McLester.

“They’re really getting to learn lots and interact with students, be they three or 93 and learning how to adjust to the different levels and the different students that walk up,” said McLester. “I’ve had a few that said they had their ideas, but as soon as the students came, they went in a totally different direction.”

Those attending were able to take part in 12 science-focused booths put on by the 44 students who participated. Topics ranged from the phases of the moon to basic forensics, all within the Alberta science curriculum.

“This really gives them the confidence to teach science. Some of them are quite nervous about science and their ability to teach it, but they become a little micro expert in the five hours that they teach,” said McLester.

Senior scientific consultant Patty Rooks says it also aids in creating completed lesson plans to add to their portfolio after the fact as well, which will help them as they move on to the next stage of their careers.

“We’re so happy to see both new and returning families this year,” said Rooks. “We’ve had some home-schooled children, who haven’t heard about us before. This just checks those boxes to get some hands-on learning for our community. It’s all about the community and fostering that love of science.”

She says she was pleased about the turnout this year and how consistently full the space was of families and education students alike.

Those who participated on Saturday in all of the different lessons were also eligible for a draw to win a collection of educational toys and tools to continue that love of learning at home.

“We love that Medicine Hat College is able to host this event. We think it works well and it’s a great learning opportunity for our students to connect with the community while also honing their skills,” said McLester.
