newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The federal government announced a new investment of $10 million over four years to support the not-for-profit youth organization Kickstand. The new funding adds to the $15 million investment from the provincial government over the course of three years through 2026. “Kickstand’s youth-centred approach helps young Albertans get fast, accessible support for mental health and wellbeing – with no waitlists and no barriers. These investments from Alberta’s government and the federal government will support youth, families and communities,” said Minister of Mental Health and Addiction Rick Wilson. Kickstand aims to provide an integrated point of access to mental health supports, substance use services, peer support, Indigenous wellness services, health care and social services. It offers confidential online and in-person services free of cost for Albertans aged 11-25. Provincially funded Kickstand centres are already operating at full capacity in Medicine Hat and four other cities across Alberta. A further five more Kickstand centres are operating with varying service levels in five locations around the province, including in three First Nations communities. A philanthropically funded location is operating at the West Edmonton Mall. The new funding will be used to open five additional centres at locations to be determined, for a total of 15 government-funded centres in Alberta. “When young people or their families walk into a Kickstand Centre, they are welcomed into a friendly, inclusive and culturally safe space where they can access mental health care, physical and sexual health services, peer support and help navigating life transitions.” “Investing in young Albertans is investing in a healthier, more connected future for our province,” said Katherine Hay, executive director of Kickstand. 11
