The annual contest provides funding to community-led projects across Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Residents of Alberta and N.W.T. are eligible to cast a vote for their favourite initiative. This year’s winning grassroots projects will share a total prize fund of $85,000. A total of $60,000 will be devoted to northern and southern Alberta ($30,000 each) with $20,000 in prize funding for the Northwest Territories and $5,000 for the new Next Gen Award for student-led initiatives. “Our voting process allows us to hear directly from the community about where the greatest local needs are,” says Farha Salim, Field Law’s managing partner. “This year, we’ve been inspired by the creativity and heart behind the community interest projects submitted, from longstanding organizations to emerging grassroots initiatives.” There are more than 100 projects competing for the southern Alberta prize. Initiatives cover a broad range of topics, including mental health, gender inclusivity, sports and recreation, cultural diversity and environmental action.
