newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The City of Medicine Hat has installed a new solar array on the shade structure at Hill Pool. The array consists of 24 solar panels which will generate 12,423 kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to about 20 per cent of the Hill Pool’s annual electrical consumption. The project was funded with support from the Government of Alberta via the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Municipal Electricity Generation Program. The government grant totalled $7,560, which covered about 20 per cent of the installation cost. “We were already planing the Hill Pool project when the MCCAC announced the grant, so it was a timely opportunity to add solar to our existing scope of work,” said Kevin Schaaf, Superintendent of Facility Project Management in a statement. “The shade structure was then engineered to withstand the additional weight of the solar panels.” Schaaf said the electricity the panels generate will help offset utility costs, even when the facility is closed for the season. 7
