newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Today Hatters are encouraged to wear orange to stand in solidarity with Orange Shirt Day and honour the children who attended residential schools, including those lost, survivors and their families. Today also marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which was established in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, aiming to foster public awareness and reflection on the injustices faced by Indigenous Peoples and promote accountability, healing and a commitment to reconciliation across the country. This afternoon, residents are invited to walk on the path of truth and reconciliation during the fourth annual event held at Medicine Hat College to honour the national day of observance. Beginning at 5 p.m. the outdoor event will include a walk for reconciliation around MHC campus as well as speeches and stories shared by Indigenous Elders. The two-hour event will also include a blanket ceremony, honour song and round dance. The Saamis Tepee will also be lit orange today in support. Several city facilities and services will also be impacted today. There will be no waste collection or transit services running. The landfill and several city facilities including the esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, Co-op Place and all city-owned recreation centres will be closed today, with the expectation of the Big Marble Go Centre, which will be open between noon to 5 p.m. 9
