There will be 15 outdoor ice surfaces in Medicine Hat this winter as the city is building a new rink in Saamis Rotary Park.
Parks and recreation crews have already begun setting up the framing for the rink, which can be deconstructed at the end of the year and used as regular park space in the summer.
“We’re excited to provide this amenity in Saamis Heights, and have it ready to go for the season,” reads a release.
The city has also put out a request seeking volunteers to help construct and maintain one of its 15 outdoor public ice rinks and ponds located across Medicine Hat this winter through the Adopt-A-Rink program.
Volunteers are responsible for building ice, occasionally flooding the rink and shovelling when necessary, however the city does provide some assistance in snow removal.
Volunteers involved are supplied shovels and hoses, training and some removal support from city crews after heavy dumps once priority trail ways are clear.
Volunteers are currently needed for all ice surfaces in city limits from Celebration Hill Pond in the southeast, Saamis Rotary Park in the southwest, to Palliser Crescent Rink in the northeast.
Interested volunteers are encouraged to fill out a simple application form found on the city’s website.
