A 62-year-old man from Calgary passed away in hospital after being struck Tuesday morning by a semi-truck at the intersection of the Trans-Canada and Highway 36, near Brooks.
Mounties were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle collision shortly after 8 a.m. and discovered a semi-truck travelling northbound on Highway 36 had proceeded through the intersection onto Highway 1 and collided with a westbound 2020 black Chevrolet Equinox, driven by the deceased.
The semi also hit three additional vehicles, causing damage before coming to a stop in the west ditch of Highway 36.
The Calgary man was rushed to a local hospital, where he passed away a short time later.
Police say the semi driver suffered minor injuries and the investigation is ongoing. At this time no charges have been laid.
New RCMP uniforms
Mounties across the country will receive an updated look Oct. 1 as they will start wearing new, navy blue shirts to replace the grey coloured shirts currently worn.
According to the RCMP the new look is part of an ongoing effort to modernize the uniform.
Beginning Oct. 1 frontline officers at detachments on the East Coast in Prince Edward Island will begin to wear the new navy-blue uniform shirts, and over the next 18 months those shirts will be rolled out to officers in other provinces.
Due to recent incidents of individuals impersonating police, Mounties say they understand a new coloured uniform may cause citizen confusion, and encourage all members of the public to ask for the officer to present ID.
“If you have concerns about the identity of the police officer you are interacting with, you can ask the officer for identification,” reads a release. “You can also contact your local detachment’s non-emergency line, or Operational Communication Centre to determine if there is a police officer at your location.”
No timeline has been released on when the uniform changes will be implemented in Alberta.
