Beginning Wednesday, residents who are unable to attend in-person voting in the upcoming municipal election may choose to receive a special (mail-in) ballot package from the city.

Residents may choose to receive their special ballot package either by requesting it mailed to their address, or by picking it up in person at city hall during office hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Special ballots can then be returned in person to the Elections Office located in city hall, or they can be mailed. The city notes all ballots must be received at the Elections Office before 5 p.m. on Oct. 20 to be counted, and late submissions will not be accepted – not Oct. 17 as originally posed by the city.

“We want every eligible voter in Medicine Hat to have their say in the 2025 Municipal Election, even if they’re out of town during voting,” said Tarolyn Aaserud, returning officer. “Special ballots offer a reliable and secure way to participate in the democratic process from wherever you are.”

To request a special ballot residents can download the ballot request form from the city’s website in the “Election 2025” tab. Residents can also request a special ballot in person at the Elections Office, located on the third floor of city hall or by calling the office at 403-529-8221.

The deadline to request a special ballot is 4 p.m. on Oct. 3.

Advance polls run Oct. 4 and Oct. 14-18 at two locations, the Hockey Hounds Recreational Centre and Holy Family Parish in the Faith Room.

Advance polls will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 4, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Oct. 14-18.

Voters will hit the polls at several voting stations from 10 a.m. to 8 a.m. on election day, Monday, Oct. 20.
