Special Olympics Canada Summer Games has its first five athletes and a long runway ahead leading up to next year’s event.

Medicine Hat bocce players Michael Baumgardt, Jessica McCombe, Ashley Truant and Nigel Zimmerman, plus 10-pin bowler Mitch MacDonald were revealed as Team Alberta members during an event on Monday, inviting sponsors and other community members to the Esplanade for the announcement.

More than 1,700 athletes and coaches from across Canada will compete in 10 sports during the Games, which are set for August 11-15, 2026 right here in Medicine Hat. Though the event is still nearly a year away, the call has been officially put out to attract volunteers to ensure the week runs smoothly.

“We’re looking for volunteers in every role you can imagine – from guiding guests and helping feed our athletes, to managing parking and entering competition results,” said Games volunteer director Darla Grasley. “There’s a role for everyone. These games will be held together by the spirit, generosity and joy of our volunteers. We know Hatters will step up and show the country how truly remarkable this community is.”

It is estimated that 1,500-plus volunteers will be needed to pull the event off to its full potential, as well as sponsors and donors to properly bring it to life, as the budget for the event is $3.85 million.

“We are so proud that Medicine Hat will serve as the host city for the Special Olympic Canada Summer Games. Medicine Hat 2026, these games will be a true celebration of sport inclusion and the community spirit that defines our city,” said Mayor Linnsie Clark. “I want to take a moment to recognize and congratulate the incredible athletes who have earned their place on team Alberta, your hard work, perseverance and dedication are an inspiration to us all. Medicine Hat is proud to cheer you on as you showcase your talents here at home in 2026.”
