newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Medicine Hat’s annual run honouring the legacy of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope has raised nearly $17,000 prior to race day on Sunday. At the time of publication, members of the community had stepped up and donated $16,931 toward cancer research, diagnosis and treatment foundation, exceeding its $11,000 goal. The annual run has become a Canadian tradition as more than 600 communities across the country participate to continue Fox’s journey to raise money and awareness for cancer research 45 years later. In 1980 Fox, a cancer survivor, ran more than 5,370 kilometres across Canada during the Marathon of Hope before his cancer returned and forced him to stop after 143 days of continuous running. In Medicine Hat, registration for the run begins at 9:30 a.m. at Medicine Hat College with the start time schedule for 10:30 a.m. The 3 km route will travel along the Sunrise Rotary Trail, around the campus and beside the Cultural Centre Pond, and is accessible on foot, bicycle, wheelchairs or on rollerblades. Dogs are also welcome on leashes. There will also be entertainment, a pre-run warmup as well as post run snacks and water. Donations toward the Medicine Hat run can still be made online by visiting the Terry Fox Foundation website at run.terryfox/92918. 10
