Coun. Robert Dumanowski announced on Wednesday his intention to run once again, hoping to continue putting his extensive experience to work for the city.

With just under 24 years of council experience under his belt, Dumanowski feels service is a calling, which drives him to seek re-election out of a love for the community.

“I love this city, and I am committed to making sure Medicine Hat continues to be a place where families thrive, businesses grow and everyone feels included,” Dumanowski told the News. “I’ve spent my career listening to people, solving problems and building solutions that last – and I want to keep doing that for the citizens I serve.”

He hopes to continue his long history of service to the city, moving forward with a platform built around fostering the local economy by supporting good jobs for citizens and pushing for growth, promoting an inclusive, accessible community and enhancing programs and recreational opportunities for youth and seniors.

The platform balances this with a strong stance on fiscal restraint and responsibility, as well as advocating for an open and transparent council that maintains positive labour relations with city employees.

“After nearly 24 years on city council, my commitment to Medicine Hat and its residents has never been stronger,” said Dumanowski. “I want to continue using my experience to make thoughtful decisions, support our families and businesses, and ensure our city thrives now and for future generations. This is about serving people with integrity, listening to their needs and doing what’s best for the community we all love.”

Dumanowski was first elected in 2001 and has since served as chair or vice chair of every major standing committee over the years.

He has also served on key boards such as the Police Commission, Shortgrass Library Board and Medalta in the Historic Clay District, as well as being part of major decisions such as the Esplanade and the expansion of what is now known as the Big Marble Go Centre.

Working closely with the region’s chamber of commerce, Dumanowski says he has consistently backed efforts to support local businesses and bring vibrancy to the downtown area for business and local culture alike. He has also historically opposed the privatization of the city’s power plant, believing essential services should remain under local control.

In his career, Dumanowski has received Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, Alberta Municipalities Distinguished Service Award for his public service and the Excellence in Catholic Education Award for nearly three decades as a Catholic educator and principal.

Facing down the potential of being the longest serving member of Medicine Hat council, Dumanowski affirms to residents his commitment to ideals such as public ownership, fiscal responsibility, accountability, community enrichment, long-term safety and a strong local identity for the city.

“Leadership isn’t about titles – it’s about results,” said Dumanowski. “I practice servant leadership every day, always thinking about the people and businesses who make this city thrive. Every action I take is focused on keeping Medicine Hat safe, prosperous and welcoming for everyone.”

“It would be a true privilege and an honour to serve the people of Medicine Hat once again. This city has given my family and me so much, and I am deeply grateful for the trust and support of our residents over the years,” said Dumanowski. “My commitment is to continue listening, learning and working every day to help families and local businesses thrive. Serving this community is more than a role – it’s a responsibility and a joy, and I hope to keep giving back to the city we all love and call home.”
