Gardeners and home growers are encouraged to grab their shovels and a large container to load up on free multi-purpose compost for the final time this season.

This Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the city will provide residents a maximum of 10 gallons of SureGrown all-natural soil amendment produced from materials accumulated from the city’s annual organics collection program.

Compost can be picked up at 1453 Hutchinson Ave., located across from the city’s municipal works buildings along Kipling Street.

The multi-purpose compost improves the physical and chemical characteristics of local soil, especially highly compacted soil, allowing increased water retention and holding capacity.

SureGrow can help replenish missing nutrients in the soil and prompt healthier root growth while improving the overall soil structure.

The compost also helps with disease suppression and pest reduction.

It is produced under industry standards to meet the requirements of category “A” compost. According to the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, this compost can be used in any application, such as agricultural lands, residential gardens, horticultural operations, the nursery industry and other businesses.

So far the city has given away more than 29,000 kilograms of SureGrow compost at the first two free compost events held in the spring.

Residents need to bring their own shovel and container to self-load and transport the compost.

SureGrow can also be purchased in bulk quantities.
