The Unison at Veiner Centre has announced it will be hosting a mayoral candidate forum next month to allow candidates to share their views and policies and plans for the city with members of the public, specifically what is planned to support seniors.

The two-hour mayoral candidate forum will be held Oct. 7 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Veiner Centre Craft room.

Additionally, the Veiner Centre will host a meet and greet for candidates running for city council on Oct. 9.

The meet and greet will run for over an hour at the Bistro beginning at 4:30 p.m. and candidates will be able to share their thoughts on how to support the city’s aging adults.

Currently, three individuals are running for mayor for the Oct. 20 election – Drew Barnes, Andrew McGrogan and Alan Rose.

Barnes, a former Wildrose, UCP and independent MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat, announced his intention to run on Aug. 13 after previously representing the riding in the provincial legislature for 12 years.

Barnes has also been involved with the Southeastern United Way, Medicine Hat Real Estate Board, Kiwanis Club and Opportunity Capital Corporation.

McGrogan currently sits on city council and will wrap up his first term this October. McGrogan is the retired chief of police for Medicine Hat and served 12 years as the city’s top cop from 2008 to 2020.

McGrogan joined the mayoral race on Aug. 5.

Alan Rose has a background in the chemical oil and gas sector and also has held a part-time position of instruction at Medicine Hat College.

Rose was the first candidate to put his name in that hat, which he did on July 21.

At time of publication, 30 individuals have stepped forward as candidates for city council, seven individuals for Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education trustee and six individuals for Public School Division trustee.

The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce is hosting two candidate forums later this month. On Sept. 24 they will host a forum for council candidates, and on Sept. 26 a forum will be held for mayoral candidates.
