newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Medicine Hat firefighters responded to 27 motor vehicle collisions in August, a rate of nearly one per-day. Of note, first responders spent several hours on scene of a head-on crash in the 1400 block of Trans-Canada Way on Aug. 21. That sent both drivers to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Firefighters also responded to two structure fires and a dozen fires that occurred outdoors. Crews were on hand to assist with 48 medical calls, as well as responding to 59 fire alarms throughout the month. The firefighters aquatics rescue team was also in the water last month after being called to respond to two separate incidents. Additionally, fire crews responded to 30 calls related to gases and carbon monoxide. On Aug. 21, Unison at Veiner Centre hosted a Senior Safety Series in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services. The workshop, titled “Safe Living 101,” covered fire prevention tips, ways to detect a scam and life-saving trends. Firefighters shared several fire and life-safety trends, which included new research and emerging issues related to smartphones and laptops. Additionally, firefighters provided free home safety inspections for seniors. 10
