The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society is moving back into its emergency house following expansion.
The Phoenix Safe House originally opened in 1998, and has seen an increase in demand for services since, which eventually exceeded the footprint of the building, requiring more space.
Construction on the safe house began in November of 2023, and the society says it is pleased to see the space once again fit for use in many of their vital supports.
MHWSS said in a post on Facebook that while all appropriate services have successfully moved back into the space, fundraising to pay for the necessary expansion and renovations continues through an ongoing Capital Plan.
The entire project was estimated to cost $8.5 million, and MHWSS is still accepting donations to continue to cover the cost of the necessary work, both through individuals and organizations who wish to support the needs of those seeking safety from domestic violence.
