Today marks the first day back to school for several Medicine Hat students, and the Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services is reminding motorists to expect extra traffic, and school buses, on the roads and to give yourself extra time to commute safely.

Motorists should also expect more pedestrian and cycling traffic on the roads, along with school buses that will be making frequent stops.

If you see a school bus with flashing lights you are reminded to slow down and stop for the school bus whether you are approaching an oncoming bus or following one. This allows students to leave and enter the bus safely.

Fire crews are also reminding motorists that school zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, including weekends and holidays.

RCMP are asking parents and guardians to remind young children to remember to stop and look both ways before crossing the road to make sure cars are stopping and it’s safe before crossing.
