Members of the Medicine Hat Drug Coalition met Monday with Mayor Linnsie Clark in her office for a proclamation, to recognize those lost to overdose.
The proclamation recognizes Aug. 31 as International Overdose Awareness Day, which aims to raise awareness of the crisis of toxic drug poisoning and reduce the stigma surrounding related deaths.
It was recognized that as the number of deaths in Medicine Hat related to overdose rises, these deaths are both preventable and represent human lives who were part of families.
“The supports in place for those struggling are necessary, however it is obvious, we need to offer a variety of resources as abstinence based only does not work for all,” said Kym Porter with the coalition. “Until we no longer bury those ‘gone too soon,’ our work is not complete.”
