A 24-year-old man from Weyburn is facing several charges after Medicine Hat police were finally able to apprehend the suspect following several attempts throughout the weekend.

In the early morning hours Saturday the man fled from police after he was observed by a member of the patrol section behaving suspiciously in the Brier Park Industrial area.

When the officer attempted to make a vehicle stop shortly before 3 a.m. the man fled at a high rate of speed in a Ford 150 pickup truck. No pursuit by officers was made in consideration to public safety, though a subsequent investigation led to the identification of the man.

Sunday morning, an officer responded to a complaint regarding a vehicle in the 900 block of Third Avenue SE and was confirmed to be the same Ford F150 from the previous night.

Once again, the driver evaded police shortly before 10 a.m. and, once again, no pursuit by officer was made due to consideration of public safety.

However, police did utilize additional tactics that led to officers locating the pickup truck in the 800A block of Braemar Street in the North Flats.

Upon police arrival, the man entered the pickup and intentionally rammed a police vehicle, then fled briefly on foot before being apprehended by officers.

The man, who has not been named at this time until charges are officially sworn in, will face charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault police with a weapon, assault to resist arrest, resisting a police officer, driving while suspended and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

The 24-year-old remains in police custody, no details on his scheduled court appearance have been released at this time.
