Roots Youth Shelter shutting down over ‘funding changes’

The Roots Youth Shelter is closing its doors due to funding changes.

The news came Tuesday afternoon in a social media post from the McMan Medicine Hat’s Facebook page, announcing the Youth Shelter’s final night of operations and admissions would be Thursday, Sept. 18. Final discharges and effective closure will come the next day.

The post says the closing is due to funding changes for the shelter, located at 250 Second St. SE. The youth shelter aimed to “provide a safe environment for youth between the ages of 12-17 who experience homelessness or require short-term shelter accommodations.” The McMan South Region is the non-profit organization which organized the program in Medicine Hat.

The McMan South Region has offices in Brooks, Crowsnest Pass, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Pincher Creek. The McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association of southern Alberta is “an innovative organization that provides accessible social services for children, youth, adults and families that have diverse and often complex needs.”

After the closure, the next closest youth shelter service for youth in Medicine Hat, according to the post, will be The Core (Wood’s Homes) in Lethbridge at 312 Third St. S. (Lower Level). They can be contacted at 403-317-1777.
