While floods can be worrying, they can be valuable for the ecosystem, and the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program hopes to show residents how. Upcoming public program “When The Water Floods” will deal with the ecology surrounding floodplains, which form by a process of silt and sand collecting from floodwaters over time, creating nutrient-rich soil that supports prairie forests. “As we walk the shoreline trails, we will be sharing information about the unique features of floodplains and how flooding over the years has shaped the ecosystems at Police Point Park,” says park interpreter Erika Derman. Participants will meet outside the Nature Centre in Police Point Park at 11 a.m. on Aug. 30. This program is free to attend and no registration is required, with drop-ins welcome. 5
