In the early morning hours Thursday, RCMP from Brooks and Bassano, along with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT), executed a search warrant on a residence in Rosemary.

There was a large police presence reported in the area Thursday. Officers say the investigation is isolated and there is no public safety risk.

Further details were not shared at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation, police say.

Assault

A 69-year-old man from Brooks has been charged with assault following an incident that occurred at Bar One last week.

Police were called to the establishment around 9 p.m. on Aug. 1 after the male, who was intoxicated, accused a female customer of touching the VLT machine he was using and allegedly struck the female in the arm.

The man, whose name has not been released by police, is scheduled to appear before court on Sept. 24.

Vehicle v. cyclist

A bicyclist has been issued tickets after causing a collision with a vehicle along the Trans-Canada Highway on Monday evening.

Police received a report from a motorist shortly after 10 p.m. who had struck a cyclist in the eastbound lane of Highway 1 east of Bassano, after the cyclist veered from the shoulder of the highway into the driving lane.

The cyclist was receiving medical attention from EMS and firefighters who were on scene upon police arrival and an investigation revealed the cyclist was wearing dark clothing and lacked reflectors before the collision.

Police say the driver, who stayed on scene and called 911, did attempt to avoid the cyclist who veered into the lane, but the vehicle’s mirror made contact..

The cyclist was issued tickets for riding carelessly and operating a bicycle without a red reflector.

Intoxicated hit and run

RCMP have issued a ticket and seized the vehicle of a driver who was seen damaging a neighbour’s fence in a back alley after making a wide turn and then fleeing the scene.

Monday evening officers responded to a hit and run call in the east of town and received photos of the suspects vehicle from a witness.

Shortly afterwards, police located the vehicle and conducted a breath demand on the driver, who blew a fail and received an Immediate Roadside Sanction.

Increased patrols

Brooks RCMP say they have increased patrols around a vacant property which has had multiple calls for service recently of squatters occupying an abandoned garage.

Police say they have increased patrols in the area and have identified possible suspects who are believed to squat in the abandoned garage that was left vacant following a 2024 house fire.

Police have also discovered evidence suggesting several individuals have been living in the structure.

Lost-and-found methamphetamine

Brooks RCMP found a “large bag of meth” recently and humorously posted a “lost and found” post to their social media account seeking the owner.

“Did you recently lose your large bag of meth?” reads the post. “We know accidents happen, but good news. It’s been found and is safe and sound at the Brooks RCMP Detachment.”

The post continues, “To claim it, just stop by and speak with any of our officers – they’ll be very excited to help you. As a bonus, we’ll even throw in a free set of matching bracelets.”
