newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The province is once again awarding scholarships to 25 Advancing Futures students through its commemorative Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Scholarship. The scholarship reflects the value the royal couple places on education and was created as a legacy in honour of their tour of the province in 2011. The awards, valued at $2,000 each, provide support and funding to youth who have been in care, as they pursue post-secondary studies. “It recognizes Advancing Futures students who have achieved exceptional grades while dealing with challenging circumstances,” said Searle Turton, minister of children and family services. “We will award $2,000 scholarships to support the studies of 25 students in programs like arts, business, science and social work, as well as diplomas in correctional services, esthetics, hospitality and paramedics.” The province says it invests more than $14 million annually into the Advancing Futures Program, which was founded in 2004 to support youth who have been in care, helping them transition into adulthood. Turton says participants of the program typically experience increased employability, higher earnings and increased participation in the workforce. “They have enhanced life skills such as financial literacy and time management while experiencing an overall improvement in their well-being, ” said Turton. ” So far, 1,575 young adults have graduated with a certificate, trade, diploma or degree.” Later in the fall, recipients of the scholarship will be issued their award payment and receive a congratulatory letter from the minister. The application deadline is Aug. 30. 11
