newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Later this month the Unison at Veiner Centre is hosting a Senior Safety Series in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services. The workshop titled “Safe Living 101” will cover fire prevention tips, ways to detect a scam and life-saving trends on Aug. 21. Officers will be on hand sharing tips on how to protect yourself from current scams and learn about tricks scammers use to deceive victims, as well offering advice on what to do if you believe you have been scammed. Firefighters will then share fire and life-safety trends, which include new research and emerging issues related to smartphones and laptops. “Plus, learn how Medicine Hat Fire Services can help protect you in the community with free home safety inspections and how to spot safety risks and more,” reads a promotional ad. The workshop will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon and will include complimentary snacks and refreshments and a door prize draw. Participants are asked to register by calling 403-529-8307. Community kitchen Next month the Veiner Centre is teaming up with the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub to provide a community kitchen program designed for low-income seniors. The free classes for seniors earning under $30,000 annually will provide an opportunity to cook in a group setting while making nutritious meals using the food bank’s kitchen. Space is limited to six individuals. The program runs each Friday in September from 1-3 p.m. To register for the program call Hope, senior support staff member, at 587-770-1420. Wellbeing workshop Next month the Veiner Centre is hosting a free session designed to provide participants with practical tools to help manage stress and boost motivation. The workshop “Connection Mind, Body, Spirit for Overall Health & Well-being” is open to everyone over the age of 50 and offers practical strategies for coping with challenges. “Explore the powerful connection between mind, body and spirit in shaping our overall well-being,” reads a promotional ad. During the 1.5-hour workshop participants will learn about the stages of change, explore ways to find balance and gain strategies to create healthy lifestyle habits. The workshop runs from 1-2:30 p.m. on Sept. 24. To register, call the Veiner Centre, or visit the reception desk. Puzzle contest Registration is now open for a jigsaw puzzle contest at the Veiner Centre on the evening of Sept. 30. Teams of four dissectologists will assemble to complete a 500-piece puzzle in the fastest time. The team to complete the puzzle first, or connect the most pieces in a two-hour time period, wins a prize. Cost for registration is $25 per team. The competition runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and the Bistro will be open until 9 p.m. 25
