Members of AWARE Medicine Hat are supporting an anti-separatist protest planned this Friday held across the street from a popular Stampede breakfast the Premier Danielle Smith and MLA Justin Wright are expected to attend.
The planned demonstration is open to anyone who opposes all forms of Alberta separating from Canada and attendees are encouraged to wear red and fly the Canadian flag.
“The time for silence has passed,” reads a social media post.
The demonstration is planned to be peaceful and family orientated and is planned to begin Friday morning at 10:30 at the corner of 13th Avenue and TransCanada Way, near the Tim Hortons.
“We feel they need to see that many of their constituents do not agree with or support separation from Canada, in any context.”
According to details shared on social media, organizers of the demonstration have concerns with the government’s ties to a group promoting provincial sovereignty called the Alberta Prosperity Project.
“Recently, our Alberta government (NEXT panel) and a group called Alberta Prosperity Project have been travelling around Alberta promoting separatist agenda,” reads the post.
The Alberta NEXT panel is a province-wide consultation panel that conducts in-person and town halls and highlights challenges that the province faces from Ottawa and may support decision making and be included in a 2026 provincial referendum.
“We’re not just losing investment, we’re losing trust,” said Smith in an online video promoting the town halls. “As I said this story is bigger than just the last decade, Alberta has been treated unfairly for decades long before that.”
The next Alberta NEXT panel town hall in Medicine Hat will be held on Sept. 2. Additionally a town hall is planned in Lethbridge on Sept. 11.
