Saturday is Parks Day, which encourages Albertans to make their way into the great outdoors to see everything that the province’s natural beauty has to offer.

“Parks Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the incredible outdoor spaces that define our province – from the badlands to rugged backcountry trails, to the peaceful lakeside campgrounds,” said Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks. “Parks are for people, and whether you are headed out to camp, fish or hike this weekend, Alberta Parks offers something for everyone to celebrate, recreate and enjoy nature.”

Whether it be by hiking, biking, fishing, or any other outdoor activity, residents are encouraged to visit one of the many parks throughout the province to reconnect with nature, explore and enjoy time with their families.

In celebration, many parks have a series of events on offer to help fill the day. These include family friendly activities, as well as educational programs that celebrate Alberta’s wildlife, environment and history.

In Cypress Hills Provincial Park, those visiting can enjoy a guided canoe tour starting at the East Boat Dock at 11 a.m, exploring Elkwater Lake with an experienced paddler.

At the beach, there will be two nature events, one based around the park’s most majestic predator with crafts and conversation surrounding the cougar, starting at 11 a.m, and a drop-in opportunity to speak with a park interpreter regarding the importance of wetlands starting at 2 p.m.

At the visitor’s centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, enjoy a colouring contest, sidewalk art, and more for younger nature explorers, and a wildlife bus tour starting at 6:30 p.m. that promises to “reveal the magic behind the island in the sky.”

Parks Day has been celebrated on the third Saturday of July since 1990.

“Alberta’s provincial parks are where memories are made, families connect, and visitors from near and far come to experience the beauty and spirit of our province,” said Darren Reeder, president and CEO, Tourism Industry Association of Alberta. “As we celebrate Parks Day and 95 years of Alberta’s parks system, we recognize the vital role these natural spaces play in our well-being, our tourism economy and our connection to the land. TIAA is proud to join Albertans in honouring the places that inspire adventure, reflection, and community.”
