asmith@medicinehatnews.com Shortgrass Library System is taking strides to improve their language learning resources, with the launch of Transparent Language Online for Libraries. The program will be replacing Pronunciator, and offers courses and lessons designed to build listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, allowing anyone with a membership to any of the 14 Shortgrass member libraries to explore a new language from their own homes. Other Shortgrass e-resources that support language development include Udemy and PressReader, which provides access to newspapers in various languages. “We’re pleased to offer Transparent Language Online as part of our commitment to lifelong learning and digital inclusion,” said Petra Mauerhoff, CEO of Shortgrass Library System. “This tool is especially valuable for travellers, newcomers, job seekers, students, and anyone with a personal or professional interest in language learning. We are grateful to the Government of Alberta for their ongoing support of public libraries across the province.” The program is made available through financial support of the Government of Alberta’s Public Library Services Branch. Patrons will have access to more than 140 languages, including English for speakers of over 30 languages, Indigenous languages such as Cree, Denesuline and Michif, as well as American Sign Language, and can access the program on virtually any computer or mobile device through a web browser or the dedicated mobile app. More information is available with local library staff, as well as on mhpl.shortgrass.ca. 9
