Province announces $200 million joint funding for affordable housing, southern Alberta to receive $0

The province, along with Ottawa, announced on Friday the latest round of funding that will be used to support the construction of more than 2,300 affordable housing units in 25 projects across Alberta.

A total of $203 million will be invested to support low-income Albertans through the Affordable Housing Partnership Program with the construction of a range of housing options, including mixed-income housing and mixed-use housing.

None of the funding announced Friday will be invested in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge or any community south of Calgary.

“Albertans deserve more than just a house – they deserve a place to call home,” said Nathan Neudorf, minister of affordability. “This investment provides that foundation that will help thousands of Albertans build a strong, stable future for their families.”

Since 2022 the province says it has invested more than $380 million into the Affordable Housing Partnership Program that has supported the construction of more than 4,000 affordable housing units and shelter spaces.

Funding for the program is eligible for federal cost-matching as well, through the Canada-Alberta Bilateral Agreement under the National Housing Strategy.

“Our government’s bilateral agreement with the government of Alberta has allowed us to work together to build a new and better generation of community and social housing across the province,” said Elenaor Olszewshi, federal minister of community resilience.

Over the next three years the province has set aside more than $655 million for the program and expects the investment will build another 5,300 affordable housing units.
