The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta is taking a close look at what rural communities in the region need most with its latest report.

Rural Futures: Regional Development and Conversations in Southeastern Alberta is “more than a report launch, it’s a call to action for solutions shaped by rural communities, for rural communities,” said CFSEA executive director Niki Gray.

“When we listen deeply and collaborate across sectors, we can create meaningful change that reflects the lived experiences of people throughout southeastern Alberta,” said Gray.

The report was created through engagement with non-urban communities throughout the region, using focus groups, surveys and local consultations, all with the goal of connecting directly with residents and organizations outside major urban centres to understand their needs.

Key findings included that over 40 per cent of rural residents face barriers accessing timely health care, especially mental health supports, that there is a 25 per cent shortage of affordable rental housing in key communities and that costs are straining local charities and service providers, threatening the sustainability of vital programs.

Difficulty with workforce retention and how lacking transportation options and social supports can contribute to isolation, were also highlighted as key issues.

These findings were presented at the Virtual Engagement Experience held July 2, where CFSEA met with municipal leaders, non-profit organizations, volunteers and community partners gathered to discuss priorities and create next steps.

Glen Motz, MP for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner, sent a video message, stating that he “really appreciate[s] the work that the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta is doing. Rural communities are much different than our urban counterparts, and they deserve focused attention to ensure we address them properly.”
