newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com RCMP in Brooks have responded to reports of three separate break and enters that occurred within a 24-hour period spanning Monday and Tuesday, with the third report leading to the arrest of 42-year-old Mark Merlik, who faces several charges Officers arrested Merlik after responding to a report of an active break and enter in progress Tuesday morning shortly after 9:30 a.m. According to police the caller reported that three individuals known to him had unlawfully entered his residence and began threatening him. Police say the man was able to lock himself in a bedroom and escape his home through a window. When police arrived on scene they arrested Merlik, while two females known to police fled the scene prior to their arrival. Merlik was charged with break and enter, mischief and obstruction, and remains in custody until his court appearance scheduled today. Police say Merlik is also wanted on multiple outstanding warrants Twenty-four hours earlier, shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday morning, RCMP were notified of a break and enter which occurred at the Torxen Oil and Gas production yard sometime over the past weekend. According to reports an unknown suspect or suspects gained access between July 4 and July 7, and stole various items including a toolbox and toe straps. Police say the investigation is ongoing after gathering evidence at the scene. Later on Monday afternoon just before 1 p.m. RCMP in Brooks received a report of a break-in at the Evergreen Senior Centre. Police say a laptop was reported stolen and discovered a deadbolt on the basement entrance had been cut. This investigation is ongoing. 11
