A mid-week Canada Day today leads to questions about what is open and what isn’t around the city on the holiday.

City hall and all administrative departments will be closed today and reopen tomorrow.

There will be no waste collection today, with collection resuming Wednesday in Zone 3. The Esplanade was closed both Monday and today but will reopen Wednesday.

There is no transit service today, with the bus service starting back up on Wednesday.

For those looking to cool off on Canada’s 158th birthday, pools and Echo Dale Park will remain open.

Strathcona Pool and Hill Pool will both be open noon to 5 p.m. Echo Dale Regional Park will have the swim lake open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Hill Pool reopened to the public Saturday, unveiling facility upgrades to the change room facilities, a new accessible washroom and change room, updated lobby space, new sunshades with solar panels, new perimeter fencing and deck lighting.

Canada Day celebrations will be underway in the city and surrounding areas.

Canada Day morning in Medicine Hat gets started with a free pancake breakfast from 9-11 a.m. at Kin Coulee Park. The breakfast is sponsored by the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub, Sysco and Link Church.

There will be a variety of free activities set up in Kin Coulee park throughout the day, including city-wide yoga, cultural performances and local band concerts. Several food trucks will also be on site during the two-day celebration running an “ethnic food alley.”

The Medicine Hat Skateboard Associations’s annual Beat the Heat competition runs from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Kin Coulee skateboard park.

There will be a citizenship celebration from 2-3 p.m. at the Kin Coulee main stage, where several dignitaries will honour and welcome new Canadians as they officially join the national family.

Tuesday’s festivities wrap up with a Good Bamford concert from 9:45-11 p.m. before a fireworks show caps off the day.

Redcliff’s Canada Day celebrations at Lions Park run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and include musical performances throughout the day from Connie Jean, Rob Cook and Mixed Company.

The Elkwater Community Association will bring back a slip-and-slide to the long hill in front of the visitors centre in the townsite of the interprovincial park on July 1.

Bike decoration for young riders will begin at 9:30 a.m. ahead of the 10:30 a.m. parade when riders wind through the town and arrive back for birthday cake at 11 a.m.
