RCMP in Alberta are reminding motorists about the dangers of driving while impaired due to drugs or alcohol over the long weekend leading up to Canada Day, as well as the country’s birthday which lands on a Tuesday this year.

Police say planning ahead and making sure you have a safe ride home will save lives, and they remind motorists of several services, including taxis and ride-share programs people can access instead of driving impaired.

Last year over the July long weekend in the province seven people lost their lives in road-related incidents involving impaired drivers, and police removed 101 impaired drivers from roads.

“On average in Alberta, one in five drivers involved in fatal collisions have been drinking prior to the collision,” reads a press release. “This compares to an average of about one in 20 drivers involved in injury collisions,” according to MADD Canada.

Police are reminding motorists they are subject to Mandatory Alcohol Screening in Alberta, and the refusal to provide a breath sample when demanded can lead to criminal charges.

Drivers with a Graduated Driver’s Licence must abide by the zero-tolerance law.

“While celebrating the holiday at the lake or on a patio, always remember you should never operate a motorized vehicle, including boats and OHVs, if you have been drinking or using cannabis,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnball with the Alberta RCMP traffic unit. “Everyone should be able to make it home safely this Canada Day. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911.”
