Thirty-four-year-old Matthew Martens, of Manitoba, faces several charges following a lengthy highway pursuit in a stolen pickup truck in the early morning hours Sunday.

Medicine Hat police alerted Brooks RCMP of a stolen pickup truck, believed to be involved in serious offences with other jurisdictions, seen departing Medicine Hat just before 1 a.m. and believed to be travelling toward Brooks via the Trans-Canada Highway.

RCMP located the pickup as it entered Brooks city limits, however while attempting a traffic stop, the pickup truck posed a danger to the public by fleeing away at high speed, driving erratically on city streets and disobeying marked traffic signs.

The suspect continued travelling westbound Highway 1 and was pulled over on the highway shoulder a short time later.

However, Martens fled once again as an officer approached the vehicle and gave verbal commands.

The pursuit continued until the pickup was successfully disabled and Martens was arrested with the assistance of the RCMP Police Dog Services and Gleichen RCMP.

Martens has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, possession of stolen property and failure to comply with a release order.

Additionally, Martens could face charges from offences that remain under investigation by other law enforcement agencies in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Martins remains in custody until his court appearance scheduled for today.
