@MedicineHatNews The City of Medicine Hat and YMCA are offering a youth pass that will allow unlimited transit rides and free entry to pools and gyms over the summer school holidays, the two groups announced Thursday. Sales of the $50 “Rec and Ride Youth Pass” begin Monday on the city’s website, allowing teenagers aged 13-17 bus rides to any location and admission for six city or YMCA locations until Sept. 5. Sharon Hayward, CEO of YMCA of Southern Alberta, called the partnership “a natural fit” that removes financial barriers and gets teens moving. “Rec and Ride lets youth try multiple facilities in the city with the freedom to get to them independently, building the foundation for an ongoing healthy and active lifestyle,” she said in a release. Transit trips are unlimited, and valid passes will be accepted at the Big Marble Go Centre, Crestwood Recreation Centre, Hill Pool and Strathcona Pool, as well as the downtown and South Ridge YMCA locations. Parks director Scott Richter said the initiative aligns with the department’s masterplan to promote accessibility by expanding that to transportation. “We prioritize active living, encouraging physical activity among residents, especially youth, to foster better overall health and well-being,” he said. Transit manager Gordon Dykstra said, “We’re excited to give our youth riders an extra opportunity to fully enjoy the summer, by safely and reliably getting where they need to go – whether accessing these recreation facilities, or any other major destination in Medicine Hat. “When youth gain familiarity with transit, it allows them dependable transportation year-round.” 11
