Over the next two months the Unison at Veiner Centre is offering a “Duet Wheelchair Biking” program that uses a specially engineered dual-bike that combines a wheelchair and bicycle to allow adults with mobility issues the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing ride.
The program, offered by Alberta South Zone’s Therapeutic Recreation department, will train Veiner staff members to offer rides to individuals with chronic conditions who may have physical, social, emotional and mental challenges that affect their leisure activity.
According to AHS the program has shown to improve participants’ coping and reasoning skills, and supports a greater independence and quality of life by reducing stress, depression and anxiety.
Duet bike rides can also be used to teach aging adults how to reduce the risk of falls. As well, many riding reports recalling fond memories of biking.
The “Duet Wheelchair Biking” program will run each Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon over the next eight weeks.
More information and eligibility requirements can be found by clicking a link found on the Unison at Veiner Centre Facebook page. Participants do not need to be wheelchair bound to qualify.
