A second potential candidate has announced they will take part in an expected byelection in eastern Alberta this year, but there is still no date for when a vote might take place.

United Party of Canada leader Grant Abraham has announced he will challenge Conservatives in the riding of Battle-River Crowfoot.

There, sitting MP Damien Kurek has said he will resign to allow Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre to seek a seat in the House of Commons.

“The Conservative Party has betrayed Alberta time and again,” Abraham stated in a release. “They talk a good game during elections but once the votes are counted, they cater to Ontario, Quebec and globalist interests. Alberta deserves representation that defends its wealth, its families and its future.”

The United Party calls itself a freedom loving party that will work toward “true Alberta sovereignty, beyond Confederation, if necessary,” and would remove Canada from the Paris climate accord and end the equalization program.

“We face the full weight of the Conservative machine but we’re not backing down,” said Abraham.

The party ran 16 candidates in the recent general election, including Aaron Patton in Bow River, where he received just 0.5 per cent of the vote.

In Battle River Crowfoot, Kurek secured a third term with 82 per cent of ballot cast in the riding that includes Oyen, Camrose and Stettler.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said shortly after the April 28 election that he would not delay a byelection for the riding, but there is no announced time table for Kurek to resign the seat.
