asmith@medicinehatnews.com The Breakthrough T1D Walk is planned for June 22, seeking to gather the community in support of Type-1 diabetes research. “People with T1D must constantly monitor blood glucose levels and take external insulin, either by pump, multiple daily injections or pen, to stay alive. And even with the most vigilant management, there are risks of potentially life-altering complications,” reads a press release for the event. “There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and – at present – nothing you can do to cure it.” The walk is one of the longest standing fundraising events in the country, with a goal of raising $3.2 million nationally to support the most promising T1D research. The walk will be held at Kin Coulee Park, with registration at 10 a.m. Organizers hope to see the community come out to support family, friends and anyone else among the more than 300,000 Canadians living with this disease. 6
