The city’s former MLA is now a board member at Medicine Hat College.

Michaela Frey was named to the board of governors in an order of cabinet issued by the province on June 4.

“It’s very exciting,” Frey told the News on Thursday. “With my experience in both Medicine Hat and Brooks, I think I will have a lot to contribute. It’s an institution that is so well respected.”

Frey’s term with the college, which has campuses in both Medicine Hat and Brooks, will conclude on June 3, 2028.

Frey was the MLA for Brooks-Medicine Hat from 2019 to late 2022 when she announced her intention not to seek re-election, then later resigned to allow then-newly chosen Untied Conservative Party leader Danielle Smith to run in a byelection.

Frey, who works as a private-sector lobbying consultant, will assume the board position recently held by former Medicine Hat fire chief and public services division head Brian Stauth, whose term concluded.

Terms are staggered to avoid a large turnover in any give year. Board chair Sarah Mackenzie’s second term on the board is set to expire in the fall.
