The city is prepared to take over operations of pound services as it explores the interest in another group taking over the services.

The contract with current provider APARC will end June 8, at which time, the city says, municipal staff will take over operation of the city-owned facility located near Gershaw Drive.

They will care for animals with the assistance of a veterinary technicians, and operate the facility by appointment only until the end of June as minor construction is planned at the building.

At the same time, the city plans to issue a request for proposals to contract out the services to other animal welfare groups

That process could take up to 90 days.

The city announced in May it would not renew the contract with APRAC, which had operated the pound since 2016. The issue was discussed in a closed public services committee meeting April 28 and again in a closed-session city council meeting May 5.
