Spectrum Festival promises a long weekend to remember, kicking off this afternoon in Kin Coulee Park.

The party will start at 4 p.m. with the opening ceremony, and from there, residents will enjoy the free festival they know and love, says Bill Woolmer, president of the Spectrum Festival Foundation.

“We’re really just continuing and building on what we’ve had in the past,” said Woolmer. “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it, right?”

As always, all the entertainment and bouncy castles for children are completely free, with only some small extras costing anything outside of shopping at the large vendor market featuring local people from all throughout southern Alberta, or the 14 food trucks which will be staying in the park for the duration of the festival.

“There’s lots going on in the city this weekend. We don’t want everyone just to come here, but we do want everyone to come here as part of their weekend,” said Woolmer. “We have belly dancers, we have Indigenous dancers, we have taekwondo, we have all the vendors I think from last year, we have a bunch of community groups. It’s a great variety, save for how many mini donuts there are, but everyone loves mini donuts.”

This festival, at its heart, is about the community itself, says Woolmer, and organizers hope that will be felt throughout the entirety of the event as they continue to strive to bring Medicine Hat and the surrounding region a free and fun-filled weekend.

Spectrum hours are 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. today, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
