Acconia Energia says its Forty Mile wind farm has begun commercial operations after construction was completed near Bow Island this spring.

The 49-turbine farm was purchased from global developer RES in 2023 and construction began that year on portions of 29 different quarter-sections north of Township Road 90 and west of Range Road 100.

In January the company told regulators that construction was delayed due to high wind conditions. It was also creating shutdown protocols on several turbines to accommodate aerial crop-spraying operations that originate at Bow Island.

The 280-megawatt facility could grow to 400 with a proposed second phase.

The Spanish renewable power company stated that construction jobs peaked at 200 over the building timeline. It will maintain 25 full-time positions for ongoing operations and maintenance, and estimates the project will provide C$133 million in municipal tax revenue over the 25-year operating lifespan.

Electricity produced by the facility is subject to a power purchase agreement with Cenovus Energy.
