Hydrogen exploration in southern Alberta has B.C. mining firm excited

Years after exploration companies began seeking out deposits of helium in southern Alberta, the search is also on for sites that produce pure hydrogen from domed formations deep underground.

B.C.-based gold miner Rev Exploration announced May 22 that it will acquire a “drill-ready” target near the Montana border, east of Writing-on-Stone.

Aden is one area of interest for helium producers, and is near helium production south of the international boundary on the same geologic formation.

Rev states in a release that it views the site with strong potential to be “Alberta’s first natural hydrogen discovery.” CEO Jordan Potts said the strategy aligns with a provincial push to aggressively promote hydrogen production.

“We look forward to rolling out the Aden story and capturing the very exciting broader opportunity for shareholders though REV’s fist-mover advantage in natural hydrogen in Alberta,” he said in the release.

Rev also announced earlier this month it had acquired exploration rights to abut 3,700 square kilometres in Saskatchewan.

Hydrogen is a non-carbon-emitting fuel that has been proposed for use to offset CO2 produced in natural gas or methane combustion in power production and home heating.

Alberta is already the largest producer of hydrogen in Canada, but most of the 2.5 million tonnes per year comes from industrial processes and refining.
