RCMP Briefs: Authorities warn of opioid-laced MDMA in Swift Current region; three ODs and a death this week

Health and police authorities say a dangerous batch of illicit drugs is circulating the Swift Current area and caused three overdoses and one death over a three-hour span earlier this week.

RCMP and the Saskatchewan Health Authority says the four incidents occurred May 20 involving supposed MDMA, also known as “Molly,” but which likely contains an amount of an unknown opioid.

They required multiple doses of naloxone to reverse.

The drug has been previously found in Swift Current, but could be circulating more widely.

The public is reminded of the dangers of ingesting drugs, as well as “Good Samaritan” laws that can shield those who call authorities for help if an overdose is taking place.

Swift Current Municipal RCMP and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service continue to investigate..

Double the limit

A Brooks city peace officers charged a driver with travelling 116 kilometres per hour – almost 70 kilometres over the limit – along Cassils Road in that city on May 22. The driver was ticketed and ordered to appear in court in June.

Minor train-truck crash

Bassano RCMP say the driver of a tractor trailer misjudged the speed of a slow-moving train when it went through a crossing that was under repair on the afternoon of May 21.

The train struck the back end of the trailer and caused minimal damage, according to a report from the Bassano detachment.

Two highway crashes

Brooks RCMP attended two accidents on the Trans-Canada Highway on May 20, including a rear-end crash in which they belief one driver fell asleep.

The crashes happened within half an hour of each other and also included a single rollover near Township Road 164 where no driver was present. Authorities eventually located the driver and the investigation is ongoing.
