Over the Victoria Day long weekend more than 400 teacher delegates will gather in Edmonton to participate in the 108th Alberta Teachers’ Association Representative Assembly.

The annual event allows delegates from all local chapters to meet, debate and establish policy, approve the annual budget and set membership fees.

Of note, delegates will be debating resolutions surrounding curriculum changes to Grade 7-9 Math, Social Studies 7-9, as well as Physical Education and Wellness 7-10 and the CALM program for the upcoming school year.

Another resolution expected to be debated will be the topic of the government’s mandated use of standardized literacy and numeracy screening assessments used for children from kindergarten to Grade 3.

Several additional resolutions will also be debated throughout the three-day meet. The association has provided members of the press a copy of its 2025 resolutions bulletin that includes 26 pages of resolutions on the agenda.

Association president Jason Schilling will provide a speech Saturday morning and is expected to speak about the implications of the new curriculum and how screening assessments affect young learners.

This year the association will present its Honorary Membership Award to Edmonton lawyer James Casey, who is an advocate for labour relations and public education and has served for 14 years as a part-time vice chair of the Alberta Labour Relations Board.
