Police remind motorists to yield to emergency vehicles and first responders

Alberta RCMP is reminding motorists to do their part in keeping first responders and roadside workers safe, by slowing down and moving over when approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights.

Wednesday marked National Slow Down and Move Over Day, established to raise awareness about the importance of driving responsibly around emergency crews and maintenance personnel working along roadways and highways.

Police are reminding motorists to always reduce speed to 60 km/h or lower, and move over a lane if it is safe to do so, creating more space for those working roadside.

“Whether it’s a police officer conducting a traffic stop, a paramedic attending at an accident, a firefighter responding to an emergency, or a highway maintenance worker performing roadside repairs, these individuals deserve a safe environment to do their jobs,” reads a press release.

RCMP also remind motorists not to take photos of emergency scenes as you drive by. Additionally, using caution in poor weather or low visibility is advised.

Drivers are also reminded of the proper steps to take when an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens is approaching in traffic, including using signal lights and safely pulling over to the right-hand side of the road, coming to a complete stop and remaining stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed.

“Do not block intersections, if already in one, clear it before pulling over,” reads the release.

Police say failing to follow these rules can result in fines and demerit point reductions, and can also put lives at risk, as every second is crucial during an emergency situation.
