Eight secure bike parking lockers are now available downtown, as part of a pilot project by the City of Medicine Hat.

As part of a goal to make cycling a safe, convenient and viable mode of transportation in the city, lockers have been installed on the west side of Towne Square, along Sixth Avenue SE.

The CycleSafe lockers are built to the highest security standard in the industry, said the city, incorporating features that make them resistant to pry bars, knives, weather and fire concerns. The lockers are permanently anchored to the ground for security and stability.

“Our city is home to 190 kilometres of trails, which efficiently link our neighbourhoods and beautiful green spaces to one another,” said Taylor Elderton, business and innovation co-ordinator for Parks and Recreation. “This amenity is a natural fit and crucial step to ensure residents can safely store their bikes while exploring Historic Downtown Medicine Hat.”

Those interested need only to download the third-party Movatic app and access a locker within minutes by scanning the QR codes located on the locks.

Lockers can be rented for $1 per hour, or $5 per day.

Weekly and monthly fee structures may be introduced depending on demand and interest, and should the interest and demand carry the project, additional locations may be considered.

To gauge interest from users, a survey opportunity will be sent to each individual once they’ve concluded their rental period. Users are asked to complete this survey to help the city learn how the experience has been.

More information can be found on the city’s website.
