Oyen Mounties get their man

RCMP officers in Oyen tracked a suspect in an online exploitation case to Toronto where police arrested and charged a suspect, it was announced Wednesday.

Mounties at the Alberta detachment said a complaint was received in late 2024 that a youth had fallen victim to extortion, and a subsequent investigation included warrants to obtain information from social media and email accounts, as well as banking information.

A suspect in North York, Ont., was identified and arrested after the Toronto Police Service executed a search warrant.

Abdul-Waris Omotolani Shittu (24), has been charged with extortion and several counts involving child pornography. He is set to appear in court on May 30 in Toronto..

Power line theft

RCMP in Lloydminster say seven power poles were damaged with they caught a man stealing copper ground wires from live power lines in a residential neighbourhood on April 30.

In a statement, ATCO said: “This ground system protects people and equipment from electric shock, lightning strikes and electrical noise. Without electrical ground there is potential of fire, damage to equipment as well as shock.”

The 32-year-old suspect was charged with possession of stolen property, theft and mischief under $5,000 and possession of break-in instruments. He appeared in provincial court Tuesday.
