Interpretive Program hosting Invasive Plant Survey at Police Point on May 14

By Medicine Hat News on May 7, 2025.

Flowering rush, as seen in this 2017 file photo, is an example of invasive plant species that can take hold in southeast Alberta. On May 14, the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is hosting an event to teach the public about various non-native plant species that can appear in Police Point Park, providing tips on both spotting an removing these invasive plants.--FILE PHOTO

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is looking to educate the public on which plants are welcome in the community with another Invasive Plant Survey.

“There are various non-native plant species throughout Police Point Park. Join the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program as we identify, report and remove these alien species,” said park interpreter Erika Derman. “Removing invasive species provides more resources for native plants to grow, increasing biodiversity and ecosystem health.”

Participants will learn different survey techniques, as well as how to safely and effectively remove these plants, just in time for summer.

The program will focus on early growing leafy spurge and removing these species by hand. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided, but those attending are welcome to bring their own.

“Thanks to EDDMapS we can locate areas with invasive plants and report them directly to the Alberta Invasive Species Council,” said Derman. “Come down to learn how to use this application.”

No registration is required for this free public program, so those interested merely need to arrive at the Nature Centre at 2 p.m. on May 14.
