@MedicineHatNews Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre visited the Battle River-Crowfoot riding in eastern Alberta ahead of a caucus meeting today in Ottawa. The CPC head is expected to run in a byelection there to rejoin Parliament after losing his seat in last week’s general election. “It will be an honour to work for their support to return to Parliament, hold the government to account and champion common sense values for Canada,” Poilievre said in a statement. Both he and current MP-elect Damien Kurek said on social media that the two met at Kurek’s residence near Camrose to discuss the issues of the riding and meet with some supporters. “We are more than confident that Pierre will be a strong voice for the West and will work hard for the people of Battle River-Crowfoot as their next Member of Parliament,” said Kurek in a statement. The date of a potential byelection has not been scheduled, though Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney has said there would be no unusual delay. Parliament resumes May 26, at which point Kurek would presumably be sworn in and then resign. An election period can be four- to six-weeks long. Incumbent Kurek won the riding with 82 per cent of the votes during the April 28 election, in which Poilievre placed behind the Liberal challenger in the riding of Carleton. Kurek was first elected in 2019 and is expected to run in the riding during the next election. 10
