asmith@medicinehatnews.com Female bikers from Medicine Hat and beyond will be rolling up to the Badlands Harley-Davidson on Saturday for International Female Ride Day. Started in 2007, not just in Medicine Hat but across the continent, International Female Ride Day was created by MOTORESS, a motorcycle enthusiast resource focused around women. “Women all over North America are challenged to go out and ride that day. And then we report the numbers in, and we see how many people kind of are riding across North America,” said Heather McCaig, local organizer for the event. The event is aimed for women’s empowerment, says McCaig, and she loves seeing all the different women and their bikes out year after year, whether they’ve been part of the community for decades or just got their licence and are about to attempt their first long ride. There is no required pre-registration, says McCaig, so those interested are only asked to arrive at the Badlands Harley-Davidson outside the city in time for kickstands to be up at 10 a.m. on Saturday. From there, the group will ride to Brooks, then to Hays for a barbecue lunch sponsored by Badlands Harley-Davidson, then to Taber, before returning to the city, meeting with riders from Lethbridge as well. “Traditionally, when we think of motorcycles. A lot of people think that it’s a male sport, but definitely in the last 20 to 30 years, it has moved into far more of a unisex community,” said McCaig. “We’re open to all bikes, all makes and models. And we really would love to have anybody who’s interested in come out and join us.” She advises that the event will go on come rain or shine, so those interested are encouraged to prepare accordingly, and to call her at 403-528-0562 for more information. 10
