Next week students will have the opportunity to participate in an immersive learning experience exploring the traditions of the Blackfoot, Cree and Métis cultures during the Kiskihkeyimowin educational event.
The week-long teaching event will begin with a traditional Indigenous grand entry opening ceremony Monday morning inside the Medicine Hat College theatre and is open to the community.
Following, Grade 4-10 students in the public system will participate in learning activities throughout the week that include learning how to drum and exploring crafts and techniques like beading and weaving.
Students will also engage in the circle of courage and smudging as well as take part in immersive storytelling, traditional dances and games.
Throughout the week Indigenous leaders, Elders, knowledge keepers and other members of the community will speak to students. Members of the public are also encouraged to explore authentic Cree Tipi structures set up on the college campus after 4 p.m.
The Medicine Hat Public School Division partnered with the college as well as the Miywasin Friendship Centre and community sponsors to create a meaningful and engaging learning experience for students.
“Community collaboration is what allows us to bring this vision to life,” reads a press release.
Additionally the event aligns with the division’s priority to foster reconciliation through education.
